What is a content strategy?

Putting it simply, a content strategy is a plan for your content creation and business. Creating a strategy helps you to plan out what you will post on each platform and where you will be showing up.

We use a content strategy in business to help our content remain consistent, and so we can feel organised and inspired!

Overall, to make sure we aren’t complicating anything, we can split up a content strategy into 3 main parts: Research, strategy, and process/execution!

What is the most important element?

The point of a content strategy is to get your content out there! This, after all, is the most important thing when you are trying to build up your content. If you have a plan in place but aren't sure what to do next, your process is what you need to look at.

I have found that a common problem with a lot of business owners is that they have a plan and the tools but they don’t realise that getting the content out there and remaining consistent is actually the hardest part. Setting yourself up for success really comes down to building on that process so you can execute and be consistent with what you are trying to produce for your audience. Remember without consistency, it is very difficult to be seen.

So, to build consistency in your business, the process or execution stage is super important. You also need to think about what days you are going to create and which platforms this content will show up on.

This all depends on your personal goals and what you have time for. At the end of the day, you started your business for a reason and this should still be your priority when you are thinking about your content schedule. Whenever is best for you to post and show up, is when you should!

How can you execute content?

So, we’ve talked about just getting the content out there, right? You’re probably thinking “OK, but what tools do I need to do that and where do I start?”. Well, let’s get into it!

It’s always a good move to start by planning which days of the week you want to post, show up and schedule. For example, I like to do a lot of my planning on Sunday so it sets me up for the week ahead (but you can do whatever works for you).

With this, you can also discover what tools will make life easier for you when it comes to planning. In fact, we have a Content Strategy template that uses Trello to help you get organised, if you’d like to check it out click here! However, if you are looking for other tools to help with content planning and scheduling, you can check out last week’s blog where we give you some handy suggestions.

This stage of your content strategy is also where you can think of things like outsourcing. Outsourcing, though it may seem daunting, is great and so helpful when you’re looking to expand, need extra time on your hands to do what you love or when you’re ready to start delegating tasks.

To get to this stage it is important to do some self-work first. Get really good at project management and keeping tasks as organised as possible, this honestly helps so much when you add a team member to your business because if you start with a strong foundation, you can only build on it from there!

BONUS TIP: To stay inspired and organised, try adding repurposed content into your strategy. Repurposing saves you so much time and, of course, allows you to create more touch points so more people see it. Plus, to get more out of your content, take a holistic approach to your themes and topics. While your niche is important, it can also be beneficial to push past this and expand further. Just make sure it makes sense to your business.
