Writing and creating your own content for your business

The content creation process in your business is not only a very important part of your marketing strategy but it is a very important part of your business.

Often as entrepreneurs and business owners, we can find this process a bit scary, daunting or we just want to put it in the “too hard basket”. Well, I am here to crush all of that (hopefully), with some things you should consider when writing and creating your own content!

If you find value in this blog, make sure you share it with me on LinkedIn, Facebook or Instagram! Even better, share it with your audience! You can also listen to the episode below!

Let’s get stuck into the different aspects of content creation you need to consider!

Your story

Whether you are a business owner or entrepreneur, you still need a brand story!

  • Know your story

Why did you start doing what you are doing? How did it evolve? Have a think about what your “origin story” is and work to pull that together!

  • Remember people actually want to hear your story

You might think it is boring but people want to hear what you have to say. People connect with people. They want to hear your story and your journey!

  • Consume your story and remember to repeat it (18 touchpoints)

You are going to have to talk about your story a lot! It takes around 18 touchpoints for people to relate and action your content! That is a lot. So don’t just talk about your story once, you have to share it multiple times!

Mindset work

Work on your mindset around your business, your marketing and your content creation - this makes a huge difference!

  • Be mindful to what is around you

Content is everywhere. But even when you create content, don’t just write it on autopilot. Review the content and write it in a way that brings you to the present. So you are aware of what you are creating.

  • Know your audience but also know that your message is what they need (they need you as much as you need them)

  • Find what is your limiting belief around writing

What holds you back?? Do you feel “annoying”? Maybe it is another limiting belief? Find out what that is and work on this. Write it down and pull yourself up every time you say this limiting belief to yourself (see below for resources on this).

  • Remember it isn't just about you

Your message isn’t just about you. Your message is about helping others and inspiring them. This is bigger than you. Remember that your message can be so powerful and can really help others.

  • There might not be a blueprint but remember a start or structure will always help

Having structures will help you, BUT also remember if something isn’t working for you - look at where you can change this! We all work differently and there is no “one size fits all”  with content.

  • Know how you write and how you work inflow

Know yourself! You are the creator. Understand how you work, how you write and OWN it. If you are systematic and like to batch a month ahead, great. If you are not like that - also great!! Know yourself and the way you work!!

Frameworks

Of course, there are also some frameworks that will help you create content that is effective for your audience. Here is a good start!

  • Strong headlines

Whether it is a social caption, blog headline OR youtube title. Have a headline that will attract and draw people in! Use this formula for your social posts if you need guidance:

Start with a verb and then the word “you” or “your”, then a noun!

For blog and youtube channels, do market research on platforms like UberSuggest! Click the “content ideas” and look at the headlines of other blog and online content.

  • Actionable content

Have call to actions in your content! Ask your audience to take action on most of the content you create. Want them to read more, purchase, like, share - whatever! Ask for the “do” in your content!

  • Use the 4 pillars of content

Ohhh yes, my four pillars will help you structure your content!! Here is how it works:

  • Inform: this is information around yourself, your business and your offers

  • Educate: the tips and tricks you provide to add value

  • Engage: the conversations and two-way posts you provide so your target audience can join in on the conversation

  • Fun: this is your entertaining posts and your behind the scenes

  • Visuals are important (show yourself and your brand)

Canva, branding shoots - make sure your visuals are strong!! Don’t underestimate the power of showing your face in your content too!

  • Brief content is also okay

It doesn’t always have to be long-form content for social media. You can create short captions! Don’t feel you have to write essays everytime you create!

Final thoughts

Working on mindset, working on the story and the message AND getting those foundations in place are so important for your content creation.

Go through and look at what you need to strengthen and also remember - there is no blueprint for perfect content. Some things will work, some won’t - it is all about knowing what content your audience likes and what you love creating!
